Plot

The film opens with the history of fire-breathing dragons, who came to the human world through a portal from their own world, bringing crystals of tremendous power. The human kingdoms of Norvagen and Draigar misused the dragons' knowledge and war erupted. Thoron, the Dragon King, appointed the wizard Xenoz as ambassador, but an evil force killed the Dragon Queen and took her ice crystal. Thoron and many followers returned to their world, vowing to return only after the war ended.

In the present, King Olsef of Norvagen trains his eight-year-old son Prince Dev, expressing hatred for the Draigar. Xenoz gives Dev his blessing. Meanwhile, King Siddari of Draigar trains Princess Kyra, blaming the Norvagen for the dragons' disappearances. Xenoz also blesses Kyra.

During their first flights, the dragons are drawn to a fireball where a portal opens and a black dragon falls through, marking both children with mystical teardrops before disappearing. Their fathers duel, and Dev and Kyra are taken away by their dragons as Xenoz watches through his scrying crystal, stating that the battle begins again.

Human characters

Prince Dev of Norvagen, voiced by Mark Hildreth, is a sixteen-year-old warrior with a troubled temperament. He is the only son of King Olsef, and his people have been at war with the Draigar for one thousand years. Dev is a brazen risk-taker and has an unusual mental connection with the air and wind, which reflects his moods. His aerokinetic abilities have grown stronger as he matured, but he lacks full control over them and over his own turbulent emotions.

Dev fears his temperament may lead to the same fate as his paternal great-grandfather, a berserker destroyed by his own battle-fury. Princess Kyra of Draigar, voiced by Chiara Zanni, is a close friend to Dev. She is thoughtful and meticulous, rarely impulsive, though this tendency can make her lack spontaneity. Kyra is fearless, brave, and formidable in battle, skilled in martial arts and proficient with a long white-and-pink bo staff.

She also possesses a mystical connection with fire and heat that flares up with her moods, similar to Dev's abilities. Kyra is increasingly troubled by Dev's moods and has tried to discuss her concerns, but he withdraws from her.

Dragons

Thoron, king of the dragons and voiced by Richard Newman, wears a large silver collar that holds no gemstone. He broke his bright green Aurothon into two shards and hid them inside Dev and Kyra, which gave them power over air and fire. Thoron can move between the human world and Dragon World, and he can activate magic places that no one else can. His queen, whose name is not known, was killed by Stendhal.

Stendhal, voiced by Scott McNeil, is a red dragon who was thrown out of Dragon World for betraying his kind. He used to be Thoron’s friend and rival, but when Thoron became king, Stendhal grew jealous and turned against him. He worked with Xenoz to murder the Dragon Queen so Xenoz could take her Ice Crystal. For this crime, Stendhal was locked away for a thousand years.

After his release, he fought Thoron again. During that battle, the Aurothon was activated. Stendhal was beaten and trapped in a golden temple, but Thoron was flung into the human world. A sorceress named Scylla, leader of the Odaku, nearly freed Stendhal in exchange for lessons on summoning Shadow Dragons.

These are spirits of evil dragons made of shadow. They speak in high, whispery voices and can frighten humans to death. They usually stay unseen but fly when called. If a Shadow Dragon kills a pure-hearted dragon, that victim becomes a Light Dragon, the only beings strong enough to destroy Shadow Dragons.

Xenoz also called up ice dragons built from dragon bones and ice. These creatures screech often, breathe sharp ice shards, and have long curved horns like a bull. Fire can melt them.
