In the News
Two-minute CBS news segments for children, 1971–1986.
In the News was a series of two-minute televised video segments that summarized topical news stories for children and pre-teens. Broadcast on the CBS television network from 1971 until 1986, the segments aired between Saturday morning animated cartoon programs. The micro-series originated from animated interstitials produced by CBS and Hanna-Barbera Productions called In the Know, featuring Josie and the Pussycats, before being transformed into a live-action-oriented series produced by CBS' News division.
The segments attempted to explain complex news stories in a way that might engage a young audience, using video clips with voice-over narration written for children. CBS News journalists Christopher Glenn, Doug Poling, and Gary Shepard narrated the segments. The series was briefly revived during the 1997–1998 season with new segments narrated by Dan Raviv, and repeats of the original were seen on TV Land in the late 1990s.
