Plot

Production
California National Productions filmed 26 black-and-white episodes with a laugh track; 22 aired in the initial run. Episodes Pasto Duro and The Vanishing House may have been postponed. The Surplus General is held by the Paley Center.
Reception and cancellation
Star Wally Cox, known for Mister Peepers, was typecast and never escaped that image; Hiram Holliday was his last starring role.
Novel
Major themes include confronting one's destiny, individual responses to great evil, and whether war would come to Europe. The book reflects Gallico's views at the time, without later hindsight—some predictions were wrong, others accurate. George Ward notes the saga was written after the Munich Agreement, showing Gallico's stance against appeasement; Holliday believes the British have grown soft and decadent, and a single American tries to fill the gap. Gallico, of partial Austrian origin, expected a Habsburg restoration that never occurred.
