He rose to fame playing Tim "The Tool-Man" Taylor on the sitcom Home Improvement (1991–1999).[1] Born in Denver, Colorado, on June 13, 1953, Tim Allen entered the world as the third of six children.[2]
Life and work
Two years later, his mother remarried and moved the family to Birmingham, Michigan.[3] Allen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in communications from Western Michigan University in 1976.[4] He started his stand-up comedy career in 1975 on a dare at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Detroit.[5] On October 2, 1978, Allen was arrested for possession of over 650 g of cocaine and later pleaded guilty to felony drug trafficking charges.[6]
Allen married Laura Deibel on April 7, 1984, and they had a daughter, Katherine, in December 1989.[7][8] He married actress Jane Hajduk on October 7, 2006, and they have a daughter, Elizabeth, born in March 2009.[8] When Allen was 11 years old, his father died in a November 1964 car accident caused by a drunk driver.[3] After serving two years and four months in prison, Allen was granted parole on June 12, 1981.[6]
What the cited sources add
A 1996 Midwest Today article described Allen's comedy as "masculinist," celebrating guyhood without uncouth gibes at women.[9] The same article reported that Allen earned about $200,000 per episode of Home Improvement or about $5 million a season.[9] Allen recalled that after his father's death, "my world changed overnight," and his family moved to Birmingham during the riots.[9] The article noted that Allen relied on his wits in prison, using humor like doing Elmer Fudd to avoid a threatening inmate.[9]
After his release, Allen worked as a creative director for a small advertising firm in Detroit.[9] A 2023 MovieWeb article confirmed that Allen returned to voice Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 5, posting on Twitter, "See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity".[10]
