McCullough spent his time at University competing in amateur motorsport, participating in some Formula Ford 2000 events. Following three years in Formula Ford, he decided to become an engineer and began his motorsport engineering career at Reynard Motorsport, initially focusing on IndyCar projects. When Reynard ceased to exist in 2002, McCullough joined Formula One working for Williams Racing, originally as a data engineer before becoming a race engineer. He worked with Nico Hülkenberg, Rubens Barrichello, and Bruno Senna, leaving Williams at the end of 2012. He then joined Force India directly, heading up the trackside engineering office. Under his oversight, the team had success including Force India's fourth-place finishes in 2016 and 2017 and a victory for Racing Point in 2020. He later became Performance Director at Aston Martin Team. In January 2025, an organisational restructuring saw Mike Krack absorb McCullough's responsibilities, and McCullough moved to Aston Martin Performance Technologies as Performance Director. On September 1st 2026, Red Bull Racing announced McCullough will assume the role of head of racing from 2027.
