Making and release

Their debut album, Under Feet Like Ours, was released in 1999 as "Sara and Tegan" with producer Jared Kuemper.[3] Because they had no drummer or bassist, the pair initially went by "Plunk", which was a shortened version of "light punk".[4] Two demo albums, So Who's in Your Band? and Play Day, were recorded by the duo in 1997 at their school's studio.[4] Studio time won as the prize for Calgary's 1998 "Garage Warz" competition allowed them to cut their first professional demo, Yellow Tape, which they released as "Sara and Tegan".[4]

Their debut major performance happened in Calgary during May 1998 when they served as the opening act for Hayden.[5] Listeners frequently confused "Sara and Tegan" with "Sara Antegan", which prompted the switch to "Tegan and Sara".[6] Chris Walla acted as co-producer for the 2007 album The Con, which included contributions from Jason McGerr and Matt Sharp among its guests.[7]

What the cited sources add

The Everything Tegan and Sara account states that the grand prize for winning Garage Warz included studio time, which the twins used to record the "Yellow Demo" tape.[8] That source also notes the Yellow Demo cassette consisted of five original songs not found on any other albums.[8] The Tegan and Sara Foundation's "About" page reports that the duo have sold more than a million records over their 20-plus-year career.[9] The same source adds that Tegan and Sara added executive producer credits after the release of the TV series High School and the Hulu documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara.[9]

According to an article by Levine, Crybaby was co-produced by John Congleton alongside the duo, and its origins lie in lo-fi demos Sara created with the Keezy sampling app.[10]
