David Kristian

Canadian musician, film score composer, and sound designer.

Last updated

David Kristian is a Canadian composer, musician, and sound designer. He got his start in audio for media in the early 1980s, working on animation and experimental film at a TV station in New Brunswick. After moving to Montreal, he left filmmaking behind to pursue music, first as a solo artist and later as a keyboardist and synthesist for the band Psyche, with whom he recorded "The Influence" in Germany.

His filmmaking background naturally steered him toward soundtrack work. His records have come out on labels including Crème Organization, Ninja Tune, and Schematic Records. He has also released music under the names Gentle Bakemono, Francesco Clemente, and DKMD, a disco duo with Marie Davidson.

Background

David Kristian left Psyche in late 1989 and returned to Montreal to concentrate on more ambient and instrumental music, citing Tangerine Dream, Robert Fripp, and the film scores of director John Carpenter as longtime influences. His return to sound design and film scoring came on Karim Hussain's Subconscious Cruelty, for which he contributed eerie ambient music, surreal room tones, and special sound design. He has composed scores for short films by Mitch Davis, Matthew Garrett's Beating Hearts, and Karim Hussain's Vision Stains (part of the horror anthology The Theatre Bizarre), as well as feature films including Hussain's Ascension, La Belle Bête, Francois Miron's The 4th Life, and Matthew Garrett's Morris County.

Other recent film score work includes most of the underscoring and end titles music for Nacho Cerdà's The Abandoned, and Douglas Buck's remake of Brian De Palma's Sisters. For the latter, he collaborated with Emmy Award-winning composer Edward Dzubak (As the World Turns); the two had previously collaborated on Buck's film Prologue.
