Background
Following the Karkador tour, P-Model lost its bassist and keyboardist. Susumu Hirasawa brought in Teruo Nakano on bass and Yoshikazu Takahashi on keyboards, shifting the band's sound. The album's style continues from Karkador, with Nakano as Hirasawa's main creative partner. They employed varied musical styles, from orchestral to classical guitar, while aiming for a lo-fi production quality.
Production
Artificial sounds were used more than on any prior P-Model album, due to the growing prominence of digital technology. The songs were recorded using a Casio CZ-5000's built-in 8-track sequencer, as the band could not afford a standalone unit. For live reproduction, they relied on intuition and whatever devices were on hand. Hirasawa used a MIDI guitar on some songs, sometimes playing it incorrectly to surprise listeners, though he struggled with gear unreliability and sound delay. Nakano played complex basslines on either bass or keyboard. Takahashi made heavy use of samplers and a cassette deck for pre-recorded choral parts, and also assisted with engineering. Drummer Yasuhiro Araki's role was greatly reduced, with most drumming handled by sequencers. The album was recorded under a strenuous schedule by a dispirited band; Hirasawa's vision was heavily constrained by circumstances, and he has since called it his least favorite P-Model album. The title "one pattern" is a Japanese phrase meaning "stuck in a rut."
