Shurdh

Albanian pagan weather and storm god.

Shurdh (Shurdhi) is the weather and storm god in Albanian pagan mythology, worshiped in northern Albania until recent times. He was believed to cause hailstorms and to throw thunder and lightning. The name is thought to be an ancient Illyrian theonym, equivalent and partly cognate of Thracian Zibelthiurdos.

Name

The name Shurdhi appears connected to the Albanian term i shurdhët meaning 'the deaf one', but this link seems coincidental. It is more likely a compound of seuro, 'water', and dos, 'giver/donor', thus meaning 'water donor'. A relation between Shurdh and the second part of the Thracian theonym Zibelsurdus has been suggested. The coincidence with shurdh-i likely gave rise to the adjectival noun I Verbti 'the blind one' or Shën Verbti, used for the weather and storm god in the Albanian Alps and for the fire and wind god in Zadrima. The theonym appears in the oronym Maja Shurdh in Kelmendi and the toponym mi Shurdh in Mirdita. Rrmoria, another name, possibly derives from rumor 'shouting, noise, rumour'.

Folk beliefs

In Albanian folk tradition, Shurdh travels on storm clouds that signal hailstorms. People can ward him off by making noise with metal objects or firing guns, a protective ritual meant to shield crops, livestock, and rural life from severe storms. Baron Nopcsa linked Shurdh to the Thracian thunder god Zibelsurdus. Karl Treimer proposed that the epithet perejont-, meaning "the striker," which underlies the Albanian divine name Perëndi, may belong to Shurdh. This suggests Shurdh was a favored god who refreshed fields and pastures and likely had a warlike character.
