Release and promotion

In late 2023, Green put out the song "After it All" on his YouTube channel, but took it down quickly because of sample clearance problems. One of his engineers later said on Instagram Live that Alamo Records had held back the release because labelmate Lil Durk was putting out music that same night. The following March, Green was arrested in Manatee County, Florida, on two counts of illegal firearm or ammunition possession as a convicted felon, tied to a shooting in St. Petersburg. Police called the shooting gang-related and said the three other men arrested with Green were alleged gang members. He was let go after it turned out the information about him being a felon was wrong. In April, he dropped a re-recorded version of his 2018 track "Numb" from the Hunger Games 3 mixtape, along with a new music video. The next month, Green announced on Twitter that he and his long-time girlfriend had split, and asked producers to stop sending sad beats, instead requesting beats like Future's. Metro Boomin quote-tweeted him, hinting he might work on the album. In June, Green posted on Instagram Stories that making the project "hurt" him, and teased the tracklist, tour dates, and merchandise as "loading." He also released the song "Lonely" on YouTube on June 21, but deleted it soon after. That September, he went live on Instagram and said the album would feature Drake, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, and Rylo Rodriguez, and shared a snippet of a track called "Best Friends" with Drake.

Critical reception

Last Lap received mixed reviews from critics. AllMusic's TiVo Staff wrote that the album is "another collection of heartbroken melodies, yearning hooks, sad piano loops, and just enough pop lift to keep the entire thing from falling into utter despair," noting that Green focuses on songs of loss, social anxiety, and emotional pain but has done little to expand his sound. In a positive review for Ratings Game Music, Quincy wrote that Green "stays true to his emotional core, delivering the heartfelt music his fans expect" and that his lyrics "feel more balanced and optimistic compared to his earlier work," showing growth and maturity. HotNewHipHop's Zachary Horvath wrote that the album features "your typical painful love songs as well as songs about his mental health," and that at times Green comes across as unsure about his own life and how tragedies will affect him.

Commercial performance

Last Lap opened at number two on the Billboard 200 with 127,000 album-equivalent units, 2,000 of which were pure sales. It was Rod Wave’s seventh top-ten album. The set generated 173.35 million on-demand streams. In week two it dropped to number four with 67,000 units, then to number five in week three with 51,000 units.
