Fahd Al-Bishi

Saudi forward who won the 1988 AFC Asian Cup and was top scorer at the 1992 edition.

Fahad Al-Bishi (born 10 September 1965) is a former Saudi Arabian forward who spent his club career with Al-Nassr and was a key attacker for the Saudi Arabia national team. He helped his country lift the AFC Asian Cup in 1988, finished as top scorer at the 1992 Asian Cup, and played at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. He scored 24 official goals for the national side and was named best player in the Arab countries in 1988. He was also the first Arab player to receive the Adidas Golden Boot.

Background

Al-Bishi began as a boy at Al-Nak'el Club before moving to Al-Nassr at 16. Coach Paulo César Carpegiani gave him his chance in 1984, and on 29 August 1984 he scored in a 4–1 win in Dammam. At youth level he played in the 1985 AFC Youth Championship in the UAE and the World Youth Cup in Moscow, then joined the senior national team in 1986. At the 1988 Asian Cup in Qatar he scored the winner against China and converted the final spot kick in the shootout against South Korea as Saudi Arabia retained the trophy. His club career was interrupted when a dispute with management led him to request retirement, and he later returned.
