Playing career
Petrov was considered a first-round talent in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft but fell to the third round because of his contract with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL. He represented Russia at the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he led his team in scoring, was promoted to team captain, and finished as the tournament's eighth overall scorer. Although there was a real possibility of Petrov joining the New York Islanders for the 2010–11 season, Ak Bars Kazan kept him under contract through the 2014–15 season. On July 1, 2015, he signed a one-year entry-level contract with the Islanders, but after 13 games with their minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, he returned to Russia to play for CSKA Moscow. His rights were traded from CSKA to Avangard Omsk on May 16, 2018. After one season with Avangard, Petrov returned to Ak Bars Kazan as a free agent on a one-year contract on May 7, 2019.
