Lore & Background
The competition was created in 1971 by Anton Witkamp, a reporter for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. The first official Super Cup trophy was won by Ajax in January 1974. The current holders are Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, who defeated Europa League winners Aston Villa 2–1 in the 2026 edition. Real Madrid are the most successful team, having won the trophy six times.
In Their Own Story
The floodlights at the Stade Louis II hummed with anticipation as the Ajax crest gleamed against the night sky in Monaco. The air was thick with the scent of cut grass and tension; this was not just a match, but a coronation of a new era. As the referee blew the whistle, the young Dutchmen moved as one organism, their passing crisp and decisive under the glare of the cameras. Every touch echoed the legacy of Cruijff and Van Basten. When the final whistle confirmed the victory, the roar from the traveling fans was deafening, a sound that traveled back through decades of history to join the echoes of 1973 and 1996.
Reader's Guide
The UEFA Super Cup is contested as a single match at a neutral venue. The match consists of two 45-minute halves. If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes, the match goes straight to a penalty shoot-out. Before the 2023 edition, extra time was played before penalties.
