UEFA Super Cup Champion

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match organized by UEFA, pitting the winners of the UEFA Champions League against the winners of the UEFA Europa League. Originally called the Super Competition and later the European Super Cup, it was rebranded as the UEFA Super Cup in 1995 as part of a broader UEFA naming policy.

From 1972 until 1999, the match featured the European Cup/UEFA Champions League winner against the European/UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winner. After the Cup Winners' Cup was discontinued, the opponent became the winner of the UEFA Cup, which was renamed the UEFA Europa League in 2009.

The current champions are Paris Saint-Germain, who won the 2026 edition 2–1 against Aston Villa. Real Madrid hold the record for most titles with six.

The competition was conceived in 1971 by Anton Witkamp, a Dutch journalist and sports editor for De Telegraaf. Inspired by Ajax's dominance and the era of total football, he sought a definitive test to crown Europe's best club. He proposed a match between the European Cup and Cup Winners' Cup champions. UEFA's president initially rejected the idea.

The 1972 final between Ajax and Rangers is considered unofficial by UEFA because Rangers were banned from European competition due to fan behavior at the 1972 Cup Winners' Cup final. Played over two legs and funded by De Telegraaf, Ajax won 6–3 on aggregate. The 1973 final, where Ajax beat AC Milan 6–1 on aggregate, was the first officially recognized by UEFA.

The two-legged format persisted until 1997, though single-match finals occurred in 1984 and 1986 due to scheduling issues, and in 1991 due to political problems. No Super Cup was held in 1974 (Bayern Munich and 1. FC Magdeburg could not agree on dates), 1981 (Liverpool could not fit Dinamo Tbilisi into their schedule), or 1985 (a ban on English clubs prevented Everton from playing Juventus).

In the 1992–93 season, the European Cup became the UEFA Champions League, and its winner continued to face the Cup Winners' Cup winner. The Cup Winners' Cup was renamed the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1994–95, and the Super Cup became the UEFA Super Cup the following season. After the 1998–99 season, the Cup Winners' Cup was abolished. The 1999 Super Cup was the last featuring its winner: Lazio beat Manchester United 1–0. Starting in 2000, the UEFA Cup winner replaced the Cup Winners' Cup winner; Galatasaray defeated Real Madrid 2–1 that year. The UEFA Cup was renamed the UEFA Europa League in 2009–10, and its winner has continued to face the Champions League winner.

In 2013, Chelsea became the first club to enter the Super Cup as holders of all three UEFA club honors (Cup Winners' Cup 1998, Champions League 2012, Europa League 2013). Manchester United matched this feat in 2017 after winning the Europa League, having previously held the Cup Winners' Cup in 1991.

From 1998 to 2012, the Super Cup was held at Stade Louis II in Monaco for 15 consecutive editions. Since 2013, it has rotated among various stadiums, starting with Eden Stadium in Prague. In 2014, the match moved from late August to mid-August on a Tuesday, following the removal of the August international friendly date from FIFA's calendar.

The 2020 edition was originally scheduled for 12 August at Estádio do Dragão in Porto, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the previous season's club finals. UEFA moved the Champions League final to Portugal, relocating the Super Cup to Puskás Aréna in Budapest on 24 September. On 25 August 2020, UEFA decided to allow up to 30% stadium capacity as a pilot, making it the first official UEFA match with spectators since competitions resumed in August 2020.

The competition was originally played over two legs, one at each club's home stadium, except in exceptional circumstances.
