Plot

After her congressional debrief on S.H.I.E.L.D., Maria Hill catches up with Pepper Potts, noting the obvious surveillance trailing her. The tails are suddenly taken out, and Hill finds Melinda May waiting in an alley. May asks for Hill's help with Phil Coulson, worried he might be compromised and suspecting Hydra's Alexander Pierce orchestrated his neural reprogramming during the T.A.H.I.T.I. project. May wants to speak with Nick Fury; Hill insists Fury is dead, but May isn't convinced.

Back at the Providence bunker, the team watches footage showing May has gone, and Grant Ward and Skye left together holding hands on the Bus. Agent Eric Koenig is missing. Leo Fitz uncovers a hidden message from Skye: "Ward is Hydra." Meanwhile, Jemma Simmons discovers Koenig's body. Shocked but realizing Skye has exposed Ward's betrayal, the team decides to go after Ward to rescue Skye. As they gear up, Colonel Glenn Talbot and U.S. Special Forces storm the bunker—Hill led them to Coulson's location. Talbot threatens prison, but Coulson tells Hill about Ward. Together, they subdue the Special Forces, and the team heads out to intercept Ward and Skye.

Skye has led Ward to the diner where she first met Mike Peterson, now Deathlok, and is stalling the decryption of her hard drive. She tips off the police, who try to arrest the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Ward overpowers them, but Skye tries to escape in a police car. Deathlok stops her and brings her back to the Bus.

She refuses to help Ward and Deathlok decrypt the drive, telling Ward she hates him despite his claims that his feelings are real. Deathlok uses a weapon to stop Ward's heart, inducing a heart attack, and Skye gives in to save him, agreeing to decrypt. She reveals the encryption is altitude-based: they need to be at 35,000 feet for the drive to unlock. As they prepare to take off, Hill confronts Ward in John Garrett's old aircraft, threatening him.

Ward calls her bluff, saying Coulson would never risk Skye, and takes off anyway. But Hill's delay gave Coulson enough time to sneak aboard via the wheel well.

Production

The twentieth episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., titled "Nothing Personal," was announced by Marvel in April 2014. Paul Zbyszewski and DJ Doyle wrote the script, with Billy Gierhart directing. Filming took place from March 6 to 17, 2014. The episode deliberately contrasts the team hiding out in a motel with the earlier episode "End of the Beginning," which featured the full presence of "big S.H.I.E.L.D." and its established agents.

The main cast included Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, and Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons. Guest stars reprising their roles from earlier in the series were J. August Richards as Mike Peterson, also known as Deathlok, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, Adrian Pasdar as Colonel Glenn Talbot, and B. J. Britt as Agent Antoine Triplett. Josh Breeding appeared as a parking attendant but did not receive a guest star credit.

The episode contains the first reference to the character Man-Thing within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though his comic-book wife, Ellen Brandt, had previously appeared in Iron Man 3, played by Stéphanie Szostak. This mention occurs during a phone conversation between Hill, a role Smulders had played in The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Pepper Potts, a character portrayed in the films by Gwyneth Paltrow.

Release

"Nothing Personal" debuted on ABC in the United States on April 29, 2014. For the season's final six episodes, Marvel launched "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Art of Level Seven," releasing a new image each Thursday before an episode to preview a key moment. The initiative was designed to connect the series to its comic book origins, with the production team selecting artists based on their style and its fit with each episode's themes. Stephanie Hans created the poster for this episode, featuring Skye and Ward with Deathlok looming behind them and the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo in the background.

Hans explained she aimed to capture "the shock and pain of having to choose between hurting somebody or betraying your team," which Skye experiences. She noted that despite Skye holding Ward "with all her might, she couldn't be more alone." The episode, along with the entire first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., was released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 9, 2014, with bonus content including behind-the-scenes featurettes, audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a blooper reel.

It became available for streaming on Netflix on November 20, 2014, was removed from that service on February 28, 2022, and later appeared on Disney+ on March 16, 2022.
