Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra
Leeds afrobeat band blending space jazz and free jazz influences.
The Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra is a Leeds-based afrobeat band founded in 2007 after jam sessions at Sela Bar. Their sound draws from Fela Kuti's Africa 70, space jazz pioneers of the 1970s, free jazz trailblazers of the 1960s, James Brown, and Tony Allen. The band signed to First Word Records in 2009. Their debut single, a cover of Crosstown Traffic with B-side 'Lost in Kinshasa', was released in January 2010. The self-titled debut album followed on 15 November 2010. In August 2012 they announced a second album, 'Towards Other Worlds'. They performed alongside Antibalas at London's Islington Assembly Hall in November 2012 and won the Tropical Sound award at the Giles Peterson Worldwide Awards on 21 January 2013.
