On June 18, 2019, six months after AEW was founded, a tournament was announced to crown the inaugural men's tag team champions. That same day, a three-way tag team match for AEW's event Fyter Fest on June 29 was scheduled, featuring Best Friends (Trent? and Chuck Taylor), SoCal Uncensored (Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky), and Private Party (Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy) with the winning team advancing to All Out for an opportunity at a first round bye in the tournament. Later, Tony Khan announced that the tournament would occur on episodes of their TNT show, later revealed as Dynamite. During the Buy In pre-show of Fyter Fest, Best Friends defeated Private Party and SoCal Uncensored to earn their spot at All Out. On July 11, Matt Jackson announced a second three-way tag team match to take place at Fight for the Fallen on July 13 with the winners facing Best Friends at All Out. At Fight for the Fallen, The Dark Order (Evil Uno and Stu Grayson) defeated Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus) and Angélico and Jack Evans to advance to All Out. At the event on August 31, The Dark Order defeated Best Friends to receive the first round bye in the tournament. In the tournament final on the October 30 episode of Dynamite, SoCal Uncensored defeated The Lucha Brothers (Pentagón Jr. and Rey Fénix) to become the inaugural champions.

The first official match of the AEW World Tag Team Championship Tournament was announced on August 9, 2019, with The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) facing Private Party (Marq Quen and Isiah Kassidy) on October 9 during the second episode of Dynamite in Boston, Massachusetts. It was later announced that the semifinals for the tournament would take place on the October 23 episode in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with the final on the October 30 episode in Charleston, West Virginia. The belts were designed by Ron Edwardsen of Red Leather Belts. They have five gold plates on a black leather strap. The center plate has a blue globe at its center. At the center of the globe is AEW's logo, below the logo is a black banner that says "TAG TEAM" in gold, and below that is a nameplate for the reigning champions. Above the globe is a black banner that says "WORLD" in gold and below the globe is another black banner that says "CHAMPION" in gold. On either side of the center plate are two side plates each that each prominently display AEW's logo. The inner side plates additionally have a wrestler performing a piledriver while the outer side plates show a wrestler performing a standing choke hold. After FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) first won the title in September 2020, the belts received a minor update with a relief AEW logo on the center plate. In 2026, the belts received another update. The side plates were changed. The sideplates now feature smaller AEW logos, with focus on graphics depicting The Young Bucks performing the "Meltzer Driver", and FTR hitting the "Big Rig".

Although All Elite Wrestling announced intentions to establish a women's tag team division shortly after the company's founding in 2019, the actual creation of the championship was postponed for several years. While singles titles like the Women's World Championship and TBS Championship were introduced relatively quickly, the tag team counterpart remained absent until mid-2025. During a media event following All In: Texas in July 2025, CEO Tony Khan revealed that injuries within the women's roster had forced this delay. He emphasized a strategic desire to build greater stability among the talent before launching such a prestigious accolade. Consequently, the official announcement finally occurred on an episode of Dynamite on September 24, 2025, setting the stage for a tournament to crown the first holders.

Inaugural Tournament and First Champions

To determine the inaugural champions, AEW organized an eight-team single-elimination tournament with the bracket revealed in late October. The competition commenced on October 29, leading up to a climactic final match at the Dynamite: Winter Is Coming event on December 10. In this decisive bout, the team known as The Babes of Wrath, consisting of Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale, emerged victorious against their opponents, Timeless Love Bombs. This victory secured their place in history as the first ever AEW Women's World Tag Team Champions, marking a significant milestone for the promotion's women's division after years of anticipation.

Belt Design and Visual Distinctions

The physical design of the championship belts mirrors the men's AEW World Tag Team Championship but features specific modifications to distinguish the women's title. The most prominent difference is found on the center plate, where a black banner beneath the main logo displays the words "WOMEN'S TAG TEAM" in gold lettering. Additionally, unlike the male counterpart which includes a nameplate for the reigning champions, this version omits that feature entirely. The side plates also reflect the division's gender, depicting female wrestlers in various positions instead of the male figures found on the men's belts, creating a unique visual identity while maintaining brand consistency.

Championship Reigns and Current Holders

As of August 2026, the title history encompasses two distinct reigns involving four individual champions. The Babes of Wrath held the belt for ninety-five days before losing it at Revolution on March 15, 2026, in Los Angeles. They were defeated by Divine Dominion, a duo comprised of Megan Bayne and Lena Kross. This victory marked the first reign for both the team and its individual members. Their current tenure has already surpassed their predecessors to become the longest reign in the title's history, exceeding one hundred thirty-nine days. Among all champions, Harley Cameron is the oldest at nearly thirty-two years old, while Megan Bayne is the youngest at twenty-seven.
