Darkened Skye
Action-adventure game using Skittles candy for magic spells.
Last updated
The protagonist Skye of Lynlora uses magic spells and a staff for melee attacks.[1] Review aggregation site Metacritic reported that the game received "mixed" reviews on both PC and GameCube.[2]
Making and release
Mars granted licenses for both brands, with the Skittles license inspired by the assumption a computer game could boost the brand's popularity among people over 20.[3] A 300-page script by lead writer Andy Wolfendon was submitted to Mars, which only requested changing a joke, removing utterances of "damn," and removing all snakes.[4] Because the M&M's characters were globally well-known, Simon & Schuster Interactive pursued the development of games featuring them.[3] During their talks with Mars, Inc., Simon & Schuster considered Skittles as an alternative if the M&M's license fell through.[3]
Braswell turned down the project at first, but later changed her mind by choosing to emphasize the gameplay and comedic elements.[4]
What the cited sources add
DeSharone stated that by the time the game was finished, Simon & Schuster did not want people to think of it as a Skittles game.[5] DeSharone noted that the game felt like it was only 50% finished before launch.[5] Liu also reported that the protagonist Skye is voiced by the actress who played Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin.[1]
