The plot begins on August 6, 1897, when the *Demeter* washes ashore in England, and police find the captain’s log. A month earlier, the ship takes on cargo in Varna, Bulgaria, including large wooden crates delivered by Romanian workers who flee before sundown. One worker pays the quartermaster and a crewman to ensure a safe voyage. Clemens, a Cambridge-educated doctor, joins the crew after saving the captain’s grandson, Toby, from a falling crate. The crew includes Joseph, Petrofsky, Larsen, and Abrams.
After leaving port, a crate breaks open, revealing a woman named Anna buried in soil. Clemens gives her blood transfusions for what he thinks is an infection. At sea, the crew sees a mysterious figure in fog. All the animals die, and Petrofsky is killed by a humanoid creature. Anna awakens and warns of Dracula, a vampire who feeds on human blood; she was given to him as a "slave of blood." Dracula kills Larsen and turns Olgaren into a thrall, who then attacks Toby.
