One Piece: Unlimited World Red

One Piece: Unlimited World Red is an action-adventure title from developer Ganbarion and publisher Bandai Namco Games, originally released for the Nintendo 3DS. It is the thirty-sixth game based on the One Piece manga and anime, and the fifth entry in the Unlimited sub-series. The story follows the Straw Hat Pirates as they reach the Island of Promises, where they befriend Pato, a magical tanuki who can shapeshift into different objects. Their adventure takes a dangerous turn when Patrick Redfield, a former admiral with World Government connections, kidnaps several crew members. With Pato’s help, Luffy and the remaining Straw Hats explore the island, fighting new and familiar enemies, solving puzzles, and rescuing their friends. They also build up Trans Town, a central hub that expands as they complete quests and gather resources, which aids in uncovering the island’s secrets. The game blends action-adventure gameplay with RPG elements like character progression and item collection.

The game launched in Japan on November 21, 2013, and was later released on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and Wii U in other regions starting in 2014. A North American, European, and Japanese release for these platforms was confirmed on March 12, 2014. The Wii U version did not get a physical retail release in North America or Australia. Most North American versions arrived by July 8, 2014, but the PlayStation Vita version came out on July 14, 2014, with a limited retail run exclusive to GameStop. An enhanced port hit Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows in Japan on August 24, 2017.

Reception was mixed. The game holds a Metacritic score of 71/100. IGN gave it 7.0/10, calling it “an exciting but sometimes exhausting brawler adventure.” PlayStation LifeStyle scored it 6.0/10, noting “a good game here hidden under layers of tacked on mini-games and half-baked ideas.” Destructoid awarded 7/10, saying it “won’t excite masters of the genre, but it has more than enough charm to make up for its simplicity.” Nintendo Life also gave it 7/10, praising it as “a good example of a licensed game done well.” Following the 2017 remaster announcement, Unlimited World Red had sold 1 million copies worldwide.
