Lore & Background

The game's plot begins as Cletus and Goal ascend to Elysium, but Rufus builds a machine to hurl himself at their pod. An accidental ejection of Goal and a severed cable send Rufus and Goal plummeting into the Rust Red Sea, where they are rescued by Captain Bozo and Doc. Doc's surgery to repair Goal's damaged brain implant splits her personality into three parts: Lady Goal, Spunky Goal, and Baby Goal. Rufus must appeal to each personality to convince them to undergo corrective surgery. For "Lady Goal", Rufus is sent to meet Captain Seagull, whom he is shocked to discover is his father, whom Rufus thought had escaped to Elysium. The story involves the resistance movement against the Organon, the revelation that Rufus is a 'trash baby' found by Captain Seagull, and a plot to destroy Deponia involving a bomb and the spaceship Elysium. The game ends with Rufus activating the bomb countdown, leading to a confrontation and Goal's return after swapping personality cartridges.

Reader's Guide

Chaos on Deponia received 'mixed or average' and 'generally favorable' reviews according to Metacritic. By April 2013, the game and its predecessor Deponia had combined global sales of 200,000 copies. The Deponia series overall achieved sales of 2.2 million copies by 2016, though Daedalic's Carsten Fichtelmann noted that most of these derived from deep-discount sales, with full-price sales being a small part of that number. The game is notable for continuing the story of Rufus and expanding the Deponia universe with a complex plot involving multiple Goal personalities and a twist regarding Rufus's parentage.
