Lore & Background
Outbound was developed by Square Glade Games, a studio based in the Netherlands. The game's reveal trailer first appeared in February 2024. In July 2025, co-founder Marc Volger announced that Outbound would release on PlayStation 5 in addition to the previously announced Windows and Xbox Series X/S versions. Later, versions for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 were also announced. A demo for Windows was released via Steam in February 2026, followed by demos for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in March 2026. The game was initially scheduled to launch on 23 April 2026 but was delayed to 14 May 2026 due to an identified issue. Because Subnautica 2 launched on Steam and Xbox on 14 May, the release date for Outbound on those platforms was moved forward to 11 May 2026, while the other platforms released on 14 May as planned.
Reader's Guide
Outbound received mixed or average reviews from critics according to Metacritic, and weak approval on OpenCritic, with only 26% of critics recommending it. Destructoid rated it 6/10, noting that it 'nails atmosphere and customization, but struggles to keep its open world engaging.' PC Games gave it 8/10, describing it as providing 'a good mix of discovery, crafting, and building.' Nintendo Life rated it 7/10, praising the exploration and gameplay loop. The game's significance lies in its attempt to blend cozy open-world exploration with campervan customization and cooperative play, though its open-world engagement was a point of contention among critics. Its legacy is shaped by its mixed reception and the strategic release date adjustment to avoid direct competition with Subnautica 2 on certain platforms.
