Brütal Legend
A roadie becomes a savior in a heavy metal fantasy world.
Brütal Legend is an action-adventure game that mixes in real-time strategy, developed by Double Fine and released by Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It came out in October 2009 across North America, Europe, and Australia. The game was originally meant to be published by Vivendi Games, but after Vivendi merged with Activision, Activision dropped it. Electronic Arts then picked it up, though lawsuits between Activision and Double Fine over the publishing rights were later settled out of court. Double Fine later released a version for Microsoft Windows via Steam in February 2013, and macOS and Linux versions followed as part of the Humble Bundle in May 2013. A physical collector’s edition for all three platforms came from IndieBox in October 2014.
Creative director Tim Schafer drew inspiration from his own musical background. The story follows Eddie Riggs, a roadie voiced by and modeled after Jack Black, who gets transported to a fantasy world based on heavy metal album cover art. Eddie becomes the savior of the downtrodden humans, fighting supernatural overlords with a battle axe, a Flying V guitar that taps into the world’s magic, and a customizable hot rod. The game blends action-adventure with real-time strategy, featuring Stage Battles in both single-player and multiplayer where players command troops to defend their own stage while attacking the enemy’s. Besides Black, the voice cast includes metal musicians Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Ozzy Osbourne, and Lita Ford, plus actor Tim Curry, and the soundtrack contains over a hundred metal songs chosen by Schafer.
Critics generally received Brütal Legend well, praising Schafer’s vision and writing for the heavy metal world, as well as the voice performances, especially Black and Osbourne. However, some felt the hybrid action and real-time strategy gameplay didn’t blend smoothly, citing console control limitations and missing features typical of either genre.
In terms of gameplay, Brütal Legend is a third-person action-adventure title with real-time strategy elements. Its open world spans about 40 square miles.

Lore & Background
Brütal Legend was created by Double Fine, with Tim Schafer serving as creative director. Schafer was inspired to create the game by his own past musical experiences. The game follows Eddie Riggs, a roadie who is transported to a fantasy world inspired by the artwork of heavy metal album covers. Eddie becomes the world's savior, leading downtrodden humans against supernatural overlords using a battle axe, his Flying V guitar that can tap into magical powers, and a customizable hot rod. The game features voices of heavy metal musicians including Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Ozzy Osbourne, and Lita Ford, as well as other celebrities such as Tim Curry, and includes more than one hundred metal songs selected by Schafer.
The game was originally to be published by Vivendi Games prior to its merger with Activision. Activision dropped the game from its portfolio after the merger. It was later picked up by Electronic Arts, though Activision and Double Fine brought counter-lawsuits against each other over publishing issues. The issues were settled out of court. Later, Double Fine announced a port of the game for Microsoft Windows via Steam, released in February 2013. macOS and Linux versions were made available as part of the Humble Bundle in May 2013, and a physical collector's edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux was released by IndieBox in October 2014.
Gameplay is third-person action-adventure with real-time strategy elements, set in an open world described as approximately 40 square miles in area. The player controls Eddie Riggs, who acquires three tools: a broad axe called 'The Separator', his Flying V guitar 'Clementine' which can cast magic spells via a note-matching minigame, and a hot rod called 'The Druid Plow' (also known as 'The Deuce'). The game includes Stage Battles in both single-player and multiplayer modes, where the player commands troops to defeat foes while defending their own stage. Multiplayer modes are team-based, with team sizes from one-versus-one to four-versus-four, and three factions: Ironheade, The Drowning Doom, and The Tainted Coil.
Reader's Guide
Brütal Legend was generally well received by game reviewers, who praised Schafer's vision and writing of the heavy metal–inspired world, and the performances of the voice cast, particularly Jack Black and Ozzy Osbourne. However, some reviewers felt that the hybrid gameplay of action and real-time strategy did not mix well, blaming console control limitations and missing features normally found in games of either genre. The game's significance lies in its unique fusion of heavy metal culture with action-adventure and real-time strategy mechanics, a combination that was both lauded for its creativity and criticized for its execution. The game's troubled publishing history, involving a dropped publisher and subsequent lawsuits, adds to its notable legacy. The eventual release on Windows, macOS, and Linux extended its reach beyond the original console platforms. The inclusion of over one hundred metal songs and a voice cast of heavy metal legends helped cement its status as a distinctive artifact of its era, though its hybrid gameplay remains a point of contention among players and critics.
