The franchise began with the 2016 film Zootopia, developed by Byron Howard, who pitched six-story ideas to Disney Animation chief creative officer John Lasseter. The film evolved from concepts including an all-animal adaptation of The Three Musketeers, a 1960s story about a mad doctor cat, and a bounty hunter pug in space. Howard's desire to create a world where animals live in a modern city designed by animals for animals was inspired by his childhood travels and films like Disney's Robin Hood. The film initially centered on Nick Wilde as the lead, but in November 2014 the filmmakers reversed the roles to focus on Judy Hopps. Research took place at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Kenya, and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, with animators studying animal walk cycles and fur color.
