Playing career

Festerling began his junior career with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL before moving to the WHL, where he played for the Portland Winter Hawks and later the Regina Pats. In 2007 he moved to Germany, spending the 2007–08 season with EV Füssen of the third-division Oberliga. He led the league in scoring with 50 goals and 70 assists in 45 games and was named Oberliga Player of the Year by eishockeynews.de. His performances attracted attention from DEL clubs, and in 2008 he signed a three-year contract with the Hannover Scorpions. In his second season with Hannover, he appeared in 18 games and won the German championship with the team. Seeking more playing time, he left after the championship season and joined the Hamburg Freezers for the 2010–11 campaign. He became a key member of the Freezers and signed a four-year contract extension in June 2014. The Freezers folded in May 2016, making him a free agent; days later he signed a three-year deal with Adler Mannheim. In the final year of that contract, he agreed to a two-year deal with rival club Grizzlys Wolfsburg for the 2019–20 season, signed on January 19, 2019. He then contributed offensively for Adler, recording 33 points in 52 games and helping the team win the DEL championship in the playoffs. On May 5, 2022, he signed a one-year contract with the Straubing Tigers for the 2022–23 season, his fifth DEL club.
