Gameplay
Dokapon: Monster Hunter takes place on Dokkano Island, in the town of Poponga. The player's goal is to become a licensed adventurer by passing an adventurer's exam, which requires completing a number of assigned missions. These missions involve defeating many monsters in battle. Once a monster is weakened, the player can collect it and use it in future battles, similar to other games such as Pokémon. Dungeons are randomly generated each time the player enters them, with staircases allowing movement between floors. Scattered throughout the dungeons are items, weapons, and shields that can be used or sold after the dungeon is completed. Monsters in the dungeons behave differently: some chase the player, some wander freely, and some run away. When the player encounters a monster, a battle begins. At the start of battle, the player chooses one of two face-down cards: one contains a sword (the attack card, determining who attacks first) and the other contains a shield (the defense card, determining who defends first). Battle commands are based on a rock-paper-scissors system, including a sword or shield depending on the turn. The sword icon represents a normal attack using the current weapon, dealing set damage based on the character's attack and the opponent's defense; attacks can be evaded depending on the speed stat. The shield icon is the main defense, reducing damage from sword attacks but not from rock, scissors, or paper moves. The rock, scissors, and paper commands have various effects, such as reflecting attacks, boosting the player's stats, lowering the monster's stats, or doing nothing at all. Winning a rock-paper-scissors round allows the player to execute their move, while losing cancels it and lets the opponent use their defensive move.
