Praful began music as a child learning recorder, flute, and electronic organ, but switched to piano and synthesizers after his mother refused to let him carry the organ to gigs. He took up saxophone at age 18 and played in high school big bands before traveling the world for a year, returning determined to center his life on music. In 1987 he moved to the Netherlands to study jazz saxophone and flute at the Amsterdam School of Arts, where he was taught by Ferdinand Povel, Friederike Darius, and Rob Madna. After graduating in 1992, he spent six months in India at Osho's ashram, learning the Indian Bansuri and taking the spiritual name 'Praful', meaning 'blossoming'.
