Development

Nalin Sharma, CEO of PuzzleKings, conceived the idea for ZooCube around 1996 while working as a principal consultant for PA Consulting Group. He imagined how something could survive being bombarded by objects, leading to rough sketches of a cube. Initial development under the title "Cubic Jiggler" was hampered by Sharma's limited 3D game development knowledge and lack of a 3D graphics card. With assistance from the Direct3D graphics API and a 3D graphics chip lent by 3dfx, the game was completed after three years. Sharma won a competition held by Edge magazine, then partnered with Acclaim Entertainment for commercial release. The game was later workshopped to broaden its appeal, and the title changed to ZooCube.
