Lore & Background

Ser Gregor Clegane serves as the head of House Clegane, a landed knight vassal to House Lannister. His physical description in the novels is specific: he stands nearly 8 ft (2.4 m) tall and weighs over 420 lb (190 kg). This stature makes him a fearsome warrior with a reputation for unrestrained violence. His cruelty extends beyond battle; under Tywin Lannister, Gregor and his personal band of men-at-arms, "Mountain's men," committed numerous massacres and war crimes in the Riverlands.

He has raped and murdered smallfolk out of sadistic joy, repeatedly avoiding punishment due to House Lannister's influence over the Iron Throne. His most infamous crime occurred during the Sack of King's Landing at the end of Robert Baratheon's rebellion. After Lannister soldiers defected from the Targaryen Dynasty, Gregor brutally raped and murdered Crown Princess Consort Elia Martell. He also killed her young son Aegon by shattering the child's head against a wall. This act left House Martell with a grudge they sought to settle fourteen years later.

Reader's Guide

Gregor Clegane serves as a terrifying instrument of House Lannister's power. His narrative arc moves from a human knight committing war crimes to a reanimated figure of supernatural horror. In the television adaptation, his transformation is explicit: after dying from manticore venom poisoning inflicted by Oberyn Martell in Season 4, he is resurrected by Qyburn. By Season 5, he returns as "Ser Robert Strong," a silent, armored member of the Kingsguard who serves as Cersei's personal bodyguard until her enemies are destroyed.

He displays unnatural behavior, such as ripping the head off a Faith Militant with his bare hands in Season 6 and torturing Septa Unella. In Season 8, he is present when Daenerys Targaryen arrives at King's Landing; Cersei orders him to decapitate Missandei. He is finally killed in the series finale when his brother Sandor confronts him. After a brutal duel where Gregor penetrates Sandor's face with a dagger, Sandor tackles him into a crumbling wall, and both brothers fall into an inferno below.

Origins and Infamous Crimes

Gregor Clegane is the older brother of Sandor "The Hound" Clegane. Their childhood was marked by extreme violence when Gregor shoved Sandor's face into a brazier simply because Sandor played with a toy Gregor rarely touched, gruesomely scarring him forever. As an adult, Gregor leads "Mountain's men," committing atrocities across the Riverlands for Tywin Lannister. His most heinous crime occurred during the Sack of King's Landing at the end of Robert Baratheon's rebellion. Betraying House Targaryen, Gregor brutally raped and murdered Crown Princess Consort Elia Martell. He also killed her young son Aegon by shattering the child's head against a wall. These acts were driven by sadistic joy rather than military necessity, yet he avoided punishment due to Lannister power, leaving House Martell with a grudge that fueled their desire for revenge fourteen years later.

The Duel with Oberyn and Resurrection

In A Storm of Swords, Gregor faces Oberyn Martell in a trial by combat. Cersei selects him as her champion, while Oberyn volunteers to fight for Tyrion Lannister, seeking justice for Elia and Aegon. The duel is brutal; Oberyn wounds Gregor with a poisoned spear laced with manticore venom. Despite his injuries, Gregor wins by crushing Oberyn's skull after admitting to the murders of Elia and her children. Mortally wounded, Gregor is given to Qyburn for experimentation. In the novels, he disappears from view, though his skull is later sent to Doran Martell, sparking debate among the Sand Snakes about its authenticity. In the TV show, Qyburn resuscitates him in Season 4, claiming the procedure will "change" him. By Season 5, Gregor returns as a silent, armored Kingsguard member known as Ser Robert Strong, serving Cersei until his death in the Red Keep's collapse.

Military Campaigns and Command

Gregor Clegane is frequently deployed as Tywin Lannister's enforcer. In A Game of Thrones and Season 1 of the show, he raids the Riverlands after Catelyn Stark captures Tyrion. He ambushes and kills Beric Dondarrion, who was sent to arrest him. Throughout A Clash of Kings and Season 2, he continues raiding and is left in command of Harrenhal to destroy "The Brotherhood Without Banners." There, he slaughters prisoners and forces Arya Stark, Gendry, and Hot Pie to escape. In the show, he is later defeated by Edmure Tully at the Stone Mill but escapes to the Westerlands. His military presence relies on intimidation; even when Robb Stark attempts a trap, Gregor's raw power allows him to survive or retreat, demonstrating his role as an unstoppable force of destruction rather than a strategic commander.

Portrayal and Narrative Presence

In the novels, Gregor has no point-of-view chapters; he is viewed through the eyes of others like Arya Stark and Cersei Lannister. This narrative distance amplifies his mythic terror. In the HBO adaptation, three actors have portrayed him. Australian actor Conan Stevens played him in Season 1. Welsh actor Ian Whyte took over in Season 2. Icelandic strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson assumed the role in Season 4 and continued until the final season. His physical presence in the show matches the book description of a man nearly 8 ft tall, emphasizing his unnatural size and strength. Whether as a raider in the Riverlands or Cersei's silent bodyguard in King's Landing, he remains a symbol of unchecked brutality, with his transformation into Ser Robert Strong serving as a visual representation of dark magic.
