The show began on 1 December 2003 with Dermot Murnaghan as presenter. From 2008, Jeremy Vine presented when Murnaghan hosted the spinoff series. After the spinoff finished, they rotated hosting until series 16, when Vine became sole presenter. The series originally aired at lunchtime on BBC One, moving to a primetime slot on BBC Two from 2005 to 2020. On 31 December 2016, the quiz made a cameo in BBC One’s Peter Pan Goes Wrong TV special. On 12 March 2021, it was announced the show would move to Channel 5 with Vine and the most recent Eggheads returning. The new series premiered on 4 October 2021, with four Eggheads and four contestants, three one-on-one rounds, and social distancing measures including lengthened desks and perspex screens.
