Background
The song dates back to 2015, when Highly Suspect performed the unreleased track live during tours supporting their debut album Mister Asylum. The band noted that audiences often memorized the lyrics despite no studio version existing. The studio version premiered in October 2016 to promote their upcoming second album, and was released as the second single with a music video on April 26, 2017.
Themes and composition
Billboard described "Little One" as an "anthemic love song". Frontman Johnny Stevens said the lyrics are self-referential, reflecting experiences the band had before the album's release. He called it a "heartbreak song", explaining that lines like "Hey, little one, I'm so scared of what this could have been / I know that today I lost my only friend" refer to his accidental self-sabotage of a past romantic relationship.
Music video
The music video mirrors the song's theme of lost love, styled after a 1980s cop drama. Stevens, distraught over lost love, trashes items in a retail store while bassist Rich Meyer and drummer Ryan Meyer play pursuing cops. The video ends with the cops dragging Stevens out of the store as the woman he was upset about, Madison Parker, arrives and looks at him without interest. The band said the scene symbolizes real events: Parker is the woman Stevens wrote the song about, and the band members as cops represent the band interfering in the relationship. The video's plot-driven style was inspired by videos like Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
