Reception

The Times’s Carol Midgley awarded the series two stars out of five, complimenting Ben Miller but faulting the plot and jarring shifts in tone. Ed Cumming of The Independent praised the acting of Miller, Emma Naomi, and Frances de la Tour, though he felt the show “isn’t quite there yet.” Anita Singh of The Daily Telegraph condemned the use of rape in the first episode and how the attacks were shown, writing, “There is promise in Tempest’s story, but, please, can this be the last time that rape is used as cheap entertainment?” National OCD organisations strongly criticised the programme for reinforcing stereotypes, similar to Channel 4’s Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners. The chief executive of the British charity OCD-UK argued that the opening sequence misrepresented OCD by showing hands scrubbed like a hospital theatre, not in an OCD manner. He stated that the disorder did not seem essential to the show, merely adding quirkiness, and that across all six episodes there was no reference to the obsessions driving the behaviours. The charity accused ITV of producing programming that is stigmatising and perpetuates stereotypes.
