Draft
The Lakers faced the possibility of losing their own first-round pick to the Philadelphia 76ers because of a previous trade involving Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns, with less than 50% odds of keeping it despite having the third-worst record that season. They ultimately kept the pick and moved up one spot. Their first-round pick for the 2018 NBA draft would be lost regardless of whether it went to the 76ers or the Boston Celtics, but they would retain their 2019 first-round pick rather than sending it to the Orlando Magic from the Dwight Howard trade. A second first-round pick at #28 came from the Houston Rockets as an incentive for trading Lou Williams for Corey Brewer. Two days before the draft, the Lakers acquired the worst of the Brooklyn Nets' first-round picks at #27 along with center Brook Lopez, sending D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov to Brooklyn. On draft night, they traded their weakest first-round pick (which became Tony Bradley) to the Utah Jazz for picks #30 and #42.
