Plot

Will Burton, a barrister who has never lost a case, agrees to defend murder suspect Liam Foyle despite doubts about his innocence. Burton finds a legal loophole, and Foyle is acquitted on a technicality. When Burton cannot travel with his family to their holiday home, Foyle attacks and kills Kate. Burton discovers her body and his traumatised son hiding in a chest; he sees Foyle outside the house.

Foyle is arrested, and Maggie Gardner, a colleague who has lived in Burton's shadow, defends him. The prosecution team includes two of Burton's colleagues, but he is barred from contacting them. Burton investigates on his own and learns that the woman providing Foyle's alibi also manages a storage unit with Foyle's possessions. Burton tips off his colleagues, leading to a police search that uncovers evidence. Later, Jamie describes the attack and mentions scratching the perpetrator, which yields DNA evidence.
