The competition searched the country for the best home-cooked dish. Hosted by Carol Vorderman, the judging panel consisted of Tom Parker Bowles, Loyd Grossman, Anne Harrison and Stacie Stewart, with Andi Oliver serving as a guest judge for the Harrogate heats. The winner received £20,000 and their dish was sold in Marks & Spencer stores, with 40p from each dish sold going to Great Ormond Street Hospital. In regional heats, contestants served their dish to one of the four judges, who awarded a rosette if they liked it.

Each judge then chose their favourite from the dishes they tasted, sending four contestants to Judges HQ in The Cotswolds, where all four judges tasted each dish and voted on one to advance to the semi-finals. The semi-finals were split into two shows, with three contestants from the regional heats competing on each show by cooking their dish for 150 members of the Women's Institute; one contestant from each show progressed to the final. In the Grand Final, both finalists went to London, where Carol Vorderman announced that their dishes would be trialed in stores nationwide.

The finalists worked with M&S to turn their recipes into a final product, and thousands of samples were distributed for customers to taste and vote on whether they would buy the dish. After the trial results were counted, the finalists returned to London with family and friends, and Rahila Hussain, a teacher from Huddersfield, was declared the winner with a chicken korma dish.
