Last updated
The Resident is a medical drama that aired on Fox from January 2018 to January 2023. Set at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, the show follows its staff and critically examines modern healthcare issues and industry tensions. Created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, the series premiered as a mid-season replacement.
Cast and characters
Matt Czuchry portrays Dr. Conrad Theodore Hawkins, the titular resident who begins as a third-year resident in Internal Medicine and later becomes an attending physician. A former Navy Corpsman who served with the Marines in Afghanistan, Hawkins employs unconventional medical techniques and has PTSD. He initially clashes with Dr. Bell over medical practices and treatment costs but eventually works well with him. Hawkins develops a close friendship with resident Devon Pravesh, who is introduced as an eager Harvard medical graduate.
Hawkins and nurse practitioner Nic Nevin had a prior relationship; they reunite by the end of season 1 and marry in the season 4 premiere. They have a daughter named Georgiana Grace "Gigi" Hawkins. In season 5, he begins developing feelings for Billie Sutton, one of Nic's best friends. He has a brief involvement with Kincaid Sullivan in season 6, after which he and Billie admit their feelings and remain together by series end.
Emily VanCamp played Nicolette "Nic" Marie Nevin, a caring nurse practitioner and Conrad's love interest, through season 5.
Production
Before it became The Resident, the project was originally set up at Showtime in August 2016 under the title The City. That version was described as a dark medical drama about an idealistic young doctor whose first day of residency puts him under a senior resident who seems brilliant but is secretly a psychopath. Amy Holden Jones was attached to produce and co-write the pilot with Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi, but Showtime never produced it. In January 2017, Fox bought the series and ordered a pilot under the new name The Resident.
A 14-episode first season was ordered in May 2017, and the show premiered on January 21, 2018. Executive producer Phillip Noyce directed the first two episodes as part of a multi-year deal with 20th Century Fox Television. The first season ended on May 14, 2018. Fox renewed the series for a second season of 13 episodes in May 2018, with pre-production starting on June 8.
That season premiered on September 24, 2018. In October 2018, Fox ordered nine additional episodes, bringing the total to 22, though co-creator Amy Holden Jones later stated in March 2019 that there were actually 23 episodes. A third season was ordered in March 2019 and premiered on September 24, 2019. It was planned for 23 episodes, but COVID-related shutdowns left three episodes unfilmed, making episode 20 the season finale.
Fox renewed the show for a fourth season in May 2020, premiering on January 12, 2021; a fifth season in May 2021, premiering on September 21, 2021; and a sixth season in May 2022, premiering on September 20, 2022. On April 6, 2023, Fox canceled the series after six seasons.

USA Today rated the series 1.5 out of 4 stars, calling it a waste of the talents of Czuchry and VanCamp.
