Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes, the miniseries holds a 77% score based on 13 reviews, with a consensus calling it a sobering and respectfully told tribute to soldiers and their families, though narrow in scope. Maureen Ryan of Variety gave a mixed review, noting strengths in depicting the logistics of war and creating empathy for American soldiers and their ethical choices. However, she found the show painful to watch and at times propagandistic in tone, with major weaknesses throughout.

Ryan criticized the intimate psychological portrayals for lacking well-written characterizations of the protagonists, though she praised the actors' performances. She described the dialogue as cumbersome and cliché, and considered scenes away from the battlefield superfluous, stretching the runtime and sacrificing watchability. Ryan stated the show sometimes attempts to create empathy for Iraqis but falls short due to a lack of development for any single Iraqi character, a quality she said applies to most characters in the series.
