Summary
On May 22, the Celtics received the fifth overall pick in the draft lottery, the worst-case scenario, losing the chance to draft Greg Oden or Kevin Durant. On June 28, they traded that pick along with Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West to the Seattle SuperSonics for Ray Allen and the 35th overall selection. On July 31, the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the largest trade for one player in NBA history, sending Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Theo Ratliff, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, a 2009 first-round pick, and a conditional pick. The trade left the roster depleted. On August 1, the team signed guards Eddie House and Jackie Manuel, and on August 9, center Scot Pollard. Danny Ainge asked Reggie Miller to return from retirement, but Miller declined on August 23. On August 27, James Posey signed, providing a significant bench improvement.
Playoffs
Despite having the NBA's best regular-season record at 66–16, the Celtics faced a difficult playoff path, playing a record 26 postseason games, surpassing the 25 games played by the 1994 New York Knicks and 2005 Detroit Pistons. In the first round against the Atlanta Hawks, the Celtics won Games 1 and 2 at home, then lost Games 3 and 4 on the road. They won Game 5 at home, lost Game 6 on the road, and won Game 7 at home 99–65. In the conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston won Games 1 and 2 at home, lost Games 3 and 4 on the road, won Game 5 at home, lost Game 6 on the road, and won Game 7 at home 97–92.
The Celtics then faced the Detroit Pistons in the conference finals, winning in six games to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1987. In the Finals, they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 4–2, capturing their 17th championship. The record for most postseason games was set in Game 6 of the Finals.
