Offseason

The Suns drafted Luol Deng with the 7th pick and immediately traded him to the Chicago Bulls for Jackson Vroman, a conditional first-round pick, and cash. They received the 16th pick from the New York Knicks but traded it to the Utah Jazz. After trading Stephon Marbury and Penny Hardaway, the Suns freed cap space to sign free agent Steve Nash to a 6-year, $65.6 million deal and Quentin Richardson to a 6-year, $43.5 million deal. They also signed Steven Hunter, Yuta Tabuse, and Derrick Dial as free agents.

Regular season

Before the season, the Suns were widely predicted to finish in the middle of the Western Conference. They won 31 of their first 35 games, then lost six straight largely due to a thigh injury to Nash. Phoenix finished 62–20, leading the NBA in points per possession, points per game, three-point shots attempted, and three-point shooting percentage. Their fast style earned the moniker 'Seven Seconds or Less.' Nash won the MVP award, and three Suns were named to an All-NBA Team.

Legacy

The team's roster appears in the video games NBA 2K16, NBA 2K17, and NBA 2K18.

Awards and honors

The 2004–05 Phoenix Suns season saw a clean sweep of major individual awards. Steve Nash was named league MVP and earned a spot on the All-NBA First Team. Shawn Marion landed on the All-NBA Third Team, placing 14th in MVP voting, fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and 22nd in Most Improved Player voting.
