Overview
The series starred Richard Dreyfuss as Max Bickford, a professor of American Studies at Chadwick College, an all-women's school in Massachusetts. A recovering alcoholic, Max strives to rebuild his life and prove his teachings remain relevant to a new generation, often clashing with faculty over his unorthodox style and cantankerous personality. His children include son Lester Bickford, played by Eric Ian Goldberg, and daughter Nell, played by Katee Sackhoff, who attends Chadwick. Colleagues include Andrea Haskell, his former student and lover now on the faculty, played by Marcia Gay Harden, and his best friend Erica, a transgender woman played by Helen Shaver. The series was one of the first produced in High-Definition, with cinematographer Michael Mayers pioneering the move.
