1991–92 Houston Rockets season
Rockets missed playoffs by one game after midseason coaching change.
The 1991–92 Houston Rockets season was the 25th for the franchise and its 21st in Houston. The team opened with a double-overtime win over the Los Angeles Lakers at The Summit on November 1, 1991. After a fast start, the Rockets hovered near .500 before head coach Don Chaney was fired on February 17, 1992, and replaced by Rudy Tomjanovich. Hakeem Olajuwon missed twelve games due to a hamstring injury; management accused him of faking it because of a contract dispute and suspended him. The Rockets finished 42–40, third in the Midwest Division, and missed the playoffs by one game behind the Lakers, who were without Magic Johnson. It was the first time that the Rockets failed to qualify for the playoffs since the 1983–84 season.
