Football Focus

BBC Saturday lunchtime football magazine programme.

For over five decades, Football Focus was a Saturday lunchtime staple on BBC One during the football season. It first aired on 31 August 1974 and ran until 1988, then returned in 1992 and continued until its final episode on 24 May 2026. Originally part of the long-running sports programme Grandstand, it shared that show's slot alongside Final Score. In 2001, Football Focus became a standalone show.

Each week, the programme offered a magazine-style look at English and Scottish football, covering all levels of the game. It previewed the weekend's matches and gave updates on games already in progress. Because the BBC held Premier League highlights rights, Football Focus also featured key moments from midweek fixtures. The main presenter was typically joined by two pundits, and Match of the Day commentators would often provide previews from the stadiums.

The show's origins trace back to a Grandstand segment called "Football Preview," which began airing before 1974. That slot evolved into Football Focus in 1974, remaining the first item on Grandstand. The programme was absent from 1988 to 1992, when ITV held exclusive Football League rights and the BBC only aired football previews on FA Cup weekends. It returned in August 1992 after the BBC secured Premier League highlights rights, again as Grandstand's opening segment. From the 2001–2002 season, it became a stand-alone lunchtime show.

Dan Walker took over as main host in 2009. In 2011, the programme moved to the MediaCityUK complex in Salford, Greater Manchester. Alex Scott became the first full-time female presenter in August 2021, replacing Walker after his twelve-year tenure.

On 23 April 2026, the BBC announced the show would be cancelled at the end of the season. The final episode aired on 24 May 2026, after 52 years on air.

The programme had a long list of presenters. Sam Leitch hosted the "Football Preview" segment before 1974. Bob Wilson presented from 1974 to 1994. Steve Rider took over from 1994 to 1996 as part of his Grandstand duties. Gary Lineker hosted from 1996 to 1999, followed by Ray Stubbs (1999–2004), Manish Bhasin (2004–2009), Dan Walker (2009–2021), and Alex Scott (2021–2026). Guest presenters included Mark Pougatch (2005), Celina Hinchcliffe (2006), Jake Humphrey (2007, 2008), Mark Chapman (2014), Eilidh Barbour (2016, 2021), Seema Jaswal (2018), and Kelly Somers (2020).

The theme song changed over the years. For the 2002–2003 season, it was "Backaround" by Elevator Suite. The 2003–2004 season used a cover of Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back" by Linus Loves featuring Sam Obernik. "Kill the Director" by The Wombats was the theme for 2007–2008, and "Jetstream" by Doves for 2009–2010. From 2012–2013 to 2013–2014, the theme was "Undegpedwar" by Y Niwl. For the 2023–2024 season, "Seventeen Going Under" by Sam Fender became the new theme.

From 2012 until the show ended, it was broadcast from BBC Sport's headquarters at dock10 studios in MediaCityUK, Salford, though some episodes were filmed on location at football grounds. A version focusing on world football also aired on BBC World News.
