Plot
A Polish doctor, Sir Adam Kelno, fled a Nazi concentration camp and later married his nurse, Angela, settling in England. After the war, Poland tried to extradite him for war crimes, claiming he performed medical experiments on Jewish prisoners as a Nazi doctor. The case failed, but Kelno moved to Kuwait with his wife to avoid the scandal. There, he modernized medicine and vaccinated children, earning a knighthood.
He then returned to England to practice in a poor London neighborhood. Meanwhile, American writer Abraham Cady, wounded while serving in the Royal Air Force, married his nurse, Samantha. They moved to California, where Cady won an Oscar for screenwriting. His Orthodox Jewish father lived with them and shared his faith with Cady’s son, angering the atheist Cady.
When the son came of age, Cady and Samantha moved to London; his father went to Israel. Cady’s affairs led to divorce, and he began a relationship with Lady Margaret, an American-born aristocrat. In Israel to see his dying father, Cady reconnected with his Jewish heritage. His father died soon after.
Cady wrote a book, The Holocaust, accusing Kelno of being a Nazi collaborator who forced sterilizations on Jewish prisoners. Kelno sued for libel in London. In court, Kelno denied sterilizing healthy Jews for the SS, but Cady’s barrister showed that Kelno had castrated hundreds of healthy Jews as punishment or experiments, causing deaths. Kelno’s son, a medical intern, disowned him.
Cady’s son died serving in the Israeli Air Force. The jury ruled for Kelno but awarded him only a half-penny, the smallest coin, for damages.
