Characters
The main characters and the team most often shown as the frontrunners for the million-dollar prize are a teenage group called Bailey's Comets. The team includes Barnaby Bailey, voiced by Carl Esser, who is the good-looking, young leader. He makes the big decisions and, though he does not like it, ends up taking the biggest chances. Candy, voiced by Karen Smith, is a pretty blonde girl.
She seems to be Barnaby's girlfriend, and she is the one who urges him to take those risks when he hesitates. Sarge, voiced by Kathy Gori with a Brooklyn accent, is a red-haired girl who acts as the team's motivator. Wheelie, voiced by Jim Begg, is the mechanic who invents strange gadgets for their roller skates. Bunny, voiced by Sarah Kennedy, is a kind but very scatterbrained girl.
Pudge, voiced by Frank Welker, is friendly but often gets into trouble. He is on the heavier side but can keep up with the others easily. Pudge loves bananas, and whenever he messes up, Wheelie calls him "Banana Brain."
The other teams are always getting in the way of Bailey's Comets and also interfere with each other. The Texas Black Hats are outlaw cowboys who ride horses wearing roller skates. Their leader, an unnamed outlaw, is voiced by Daws Butler. The Jekyll-Hydes are English doctors in top hats who turn into ugly green-skinned monsters at bad moments.
Their leader, Henry, is voiced by Don Messick. In their normal forms, they look like Roland from the Roland and Ratfink cartoons. The Ramblin' Rivets consist of a professor, voiced by Daws Butler, and his robots named Scrappy, Boltsbucket, and Fenderbender. Each robot has built-in mechanical tools to help the team in the race.
The Duster Busters are a motorcycle gang led by an unnamed leader voiced by Frank Welker. They skate in a half-sitting pose, as if they are riding motorcycles. The Roller Coasters are a circus team with a ringmaster voiced by Don Messick, Hercules the Strongman, Big Bertha the Fat Lady, a lion on roller skates, a clown who rides the lion, and an Indian Rubber Man. The Stone Rollers are three cavemen on roller skates, all voiced by Bob Holt, plus a dinosaur on roller skates with vocal effects by Don Messick.
The Cosmic Rays are four aliens inside a flying saucer that skates. The Gargantuan Giants are a giant football team so huge that only their skates are visible on screen. Their normal-sized coach, voiced by Don Messick, rides on one of his players' skates. The Rockin' Rollers are a rock band.
The Broomer Girls are witches on broomsticks equipped with roller skates, led by Auntie Hag. They also have a snickering cat on roller skates. The Roller Bears are five bears, four adults and one cub. They are the clumsiest team, always blundering and laughing like fools no matter what goes wrong.
The Mystery Mob is a team of skaters always hidden inside a big cloud of dust, with arms and legs flailing around. Nobody knows what they look like. The Yo Ho-Ho's are pirates led by a captain who acts like William Bligh, voiced by Daws Butler. They use a raft on roller skates.
One pirate named Grog, voiced by Frank Welker, rows, another pirate holds a sail like a mast, and a third pirate rides in a barrel on roller skates attached to the raft. The Hairy Mountain Red Eyes are a hillbilly family. Pa, voiced by Don Messick, is the leader and rides in a wash bucket on roller skates. Ma carries a hoe, and there are two boys, Cornball and another unnamed boy who carries a pig.
Two commentators, Gabby and Dooter Roo, follow the race from a helicopter. Gabby is voiced by Frank Welker doing an impression of Howard Cosell, and Dooter Roo is voiced by Daws Butler. They keep track of everything but almost never get involved in the race itself. The cast includes Jim Begg as Wheelie, Daws Butler as Dooter Roo, the Pirate Captain, the Professor, and the Texas Black Hats Leader, Carl Esser as Barnaby Bailey, Kathy Gori as Sarge, Bob Holt as Dude and the Stone Rollers, Sarah Kennedy as Bunny, Don Messick as Henry, the Gargantuan Giants' Coach, the Ringmaster, the Stone Rollers' Dinosaur, and Pa Redeye, Karen Smith as Candy, and Frank Welker as Pudge, Gabby, the Duster Busters Leader, and Grog.
