The Bold Ones

Four rotating series under one umbrella title.

The Bold Ones served as an overarching title for a group of TV shows. Universal Television created them, and NBC aired them from 1969 to 1973. The series used a wheel format, a scheduling method the network also applied to The Name of the Game and the NBC Mystery Movie.

Segments

Over four years, The Bold Ones comprised four segments, three of which rotated during the first two seasons. In the third season, the two surviving segments—The New Doctors and The Lawyers—alternated, and in the fourth season The New Doctors was the sole occupant. As with the earlier wheel series The Name of the Game, a season consisted of 24 original episodes, with eight shows filmed for each segment. In the debut season, the police drama The Protectors had its order reduced by two episodes because of a new network mandate to curtail on-screen violence, action, and danger; The New Doctors received those two extra episodes.

For the abbreviated fourth season, The New Doctors produced 15 episodes as the sole segment. The four elements were: The Bold Ones: The New Doctors (1969–73), starring E. G. Marshall, David Hartman, and John Saxon (replaced by Robert Walden in the final season); The Bold Ones: The Lawyers (1969–72), starring Burl Ives, Joseph Campanella, and James Farentino, based on the TV movies The Sound of Anger and The Whole World Is Watching; The Bold Ones: The Protectors (1969–70), starring Leslie Nielsen and Hari Rhodes, based on the TV movie Deadlock; and The Bold Ones: The Senator (1970–71), starring Hal Holbrook, based on the TV movie A Clear and Present Danger.

The New Doctors was set at the David Craig Institute for New Medicine, named after E. G. Marshall's character Dr. David Craig, with David Hartman as Dr. Paul Hunter and John Saxon as Dr. Theodore Stuart, replaced in season four by Robert Walden as Dr. Martin Cohen; these stories were medical dramas.
