Critical reception

Peter Robinson of The Observer described Funky Dory as an excellent album, stylish, decadent, and temperamental, teeming with melodrama. He compared it favorably to a Geri Halliwell album but without desperation, noting that Stevens lacked a defined personality after years in pop.

Chart performance

Funky Dory debuted and peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart. It was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry after three days and reached gold status on 10 October 2003, spending six weeks in the top seventy-five. The 2004 reissue debuted at number thirteen, selling 14,600 copies in its first week and becoming the 180th best-selling album of 2004 in the UK. Combined sales of both editions exceeded 110,000 copies.
